ABOUT
Emily Abdy is a critically acclaimed British composer, songwriter and interdisciplinary artist. She is known for her unique compositional approach, blending popular and experimental songwriting styles with neo-classical and cinematic orchestration, as well as spoken word. Her work spans pieces for renowned professional musicians, media project scores and distinctive musical arrangements.
Her previous collaborations include work with the London Symphony Orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia, and Orkest de Ereprijs, as well as labels and promoters such as nonclassical and NMC Recordings. She has composed music for screen, including her own short film SKIN (2019), and has arranged work for large-scale projects, including for Tandy and Morgan, formerly of Electric Light Orchestra. She frequently produces and performs her own work.
She graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with an MMus (Distinction) and a BMus (First Class) in music composition. Her studies were sponsored by Universal Music UK and she was twice awarded the institution’s orchestral prize, along with the John Mayer Composition Prize. Her academic research on screen and popular music has led to invitations to present at renowned institutions such as the Institute of Popular Music. Her previous mentors include Errollyn Wallen (MBE), Jennifer Walshe, and Gazelle Twin. She has also mentored young composers herself, as part of Birmingham’s Young Composers Project.
Emily currently divides her time between London, Birmingham, and the rural UK Midlands, as well as travelling for international projects and working on collaborations remotely.
